The short answer

What is a lead scoring model?

A lead scoring model is a set of rules that gives each new lead points for who they are (fit, such as a business email or company size) and what they asked for (intent, such as the page they used or how detailed their message is). The points add up to a score, usually 0 to 100, and bands such as Hot from 70 and Warm from 40 tell your team who to answer first and how fast.

How it works

The rules the builder follows.

Each rule links to the vendor page we read it on. LiftUp’s own rules are from its product code.
  1. 01

    Fit and intent, scored apart

HubSpot splits a score into fit, from properties such as job title and company size, and engagement, from what the contact does. The builder groups signals the same way: Fit for who the lead is, Intent for what they asked for on the form.

  2. 02

Points per answer, scaled to 100

HubSpot’s default maximum for a score is 100 points. The builder scales your total the same way: score = round(points earned ÷ most points possible × 100). Pick “Stop at 100” to add points up and drop anything past 100, as LiftUp does.

  3. 03

    Bands by score range

Dynamics 365 builds a model from attributes, such as company or job title, and interactions, then grades leads by score range, such as Hot and Cold. Here the bands are Hot, Warm and Standard, and each one carries a reply deadline.

  4. 04

Strong intent should reach Hot on its own

Marketo suggests that an action such as a demo request should meet the threshold by itself, and that you review the model with sales. In the presets, a detailed enquiry from the right page lands in Hot.

  5. 05

    No decay or negative points

Marketo’s scoring template takes 10 points off for no activity and lets scores decay. Both need activity tracked over time. A form model like this one scores each lead once, from what it sent, so points only add up.

How LiftUp scores a lead today

Six signals, scored once when the lead arrives: lead source, the page the form was on, lead type, a reCAPTCHA check, the message and a business email domain. Each can be weighted from 0 to 300%, then the points are added up and capped at 100. Hot starts at 70 (reply in 4 hours), Warm at 40 (12 hours), the rest get 24 hours.

Worked example

Three sample leads on the Agency preset.

The builder opens on this preset, with 100 points possible. “Try a sample list” loads these three leads and five more.
Priya Raman · /hire page, referral
90 · Hot · reply by 16 Oct, 13:15
Mark Jensen · /contact page, direct
56 · Warm · reply by 17 Oct, 20:30
Rank Fast SEO · reCAPTCHA 0.1
14 · Standard · reply by 18 Oct, 13:20
Whole sample list, 8 leads
3 Hot · 2 Warm · 3 Standard
Same 3 on LiftUp’s built-in rules
100 · 73 · 21
Closest LiftUp message weight
155%

Priya earns 20 for the /hire page, 20 for a referral, 13 for a 247-character message that mentions a budget, 12 for a $25,000 budget, 10 for a business email, and 5 each for a contact enquiry, an ASAP timeline and a 0.9 reCAPTCHA score: 90 in all. Mark misses the message points with a one-line note. On LiftUp’s own rules Priya earns 102, which stops at 100, and Mark’s contact page and contact enquiry are worth 40 together, which lifts him to Hot.

Good to know

What the builder doesn’t do.

  • It scores what a form or export already holds. It doesn’t track email opens, repeat visits or anything else a lead does over time.
  • There is no decay and no negative scoring: each lead is scored once, as LiftUp does.
  • Signals marked “Model only”, such as job title, company size, budget and timeline, aren’t scored by LiftUp. Keep them for another CRM, or for reading leads yourself.
  • LiftUp’s bands are fixed at 70 and 40, with 4, 12 and 24 hour reply deadlines counted on the clock. Other thresholds or hours here are a team rule, not a LiftUp setting.
  • Text answers match on keywords, so read a few scored rows before you trust a new model.

FAQ

Lead scoring questions, answered.

Something the tool gets wrong? Tell us and we fix it.

What is a good lead score threshold?

One where Hot leads become customers clearly more often than Warm leads. Many teams start with Hot from 70 and Warm from 40, which is HubSpot’s example and LiftUp’s fixed setting. After 50 to 100 leads, count the customers in each band and move the thresholds until the bands separate.

What is the difference between fit and intent?

Fit is who the lead is: a business email, company size, job title or budget. Intent is what they did and asked for: the page they were on, where they came from, how detailed their message is and how soon they want to start. Scoring both stops a perfect-fit lead with no real need from outranking a buyer who is ready to talk.

Does LiftUp score leads automatically?

Yes, on every plan, Free included. Each new lead gets a score from six signals when it arrives: lead source, the page the form was on, lead type, a reCAPTCHA check, the message and a business email domain. The lead page shows the points per signal. On Starter and up you can weight each signal from 0 to 300%, and new weights apply to leads that arrive after the change.

Can I change LiftUp’s thresholds or reply deadlines?

Not today. Hot starts at 70 with a 4 hour deadline, Warm at 40 with 12 hours, and the rest get 24 hours, counted on the clock rather than in business hours. LiftUp’s routing rules call the lowest band Cold. You can set other thresholds here to plan a model or to use in another CRM.

Is my lead list uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and scored in your browser and never leaves your device. Only the report form, if you fill it in, sends your name and email with a one-line summary: the preset, the thresholds and the band counts.

Score every lead as it arrives.

LiftUp scores each new lead from your forms and gives it a reply deadline by band, so the team knows who to answer first. Free for 2 users.
